Handel's Messiah is an oratorio that tells the story of Jesus Christ, from his birth and passion to his resurrection and eventual glory. The libretto, written by Charles Jennens, uses 73 biblical verses to trace the Christian narrative and was composed rapidly by Handel in 1741. The work's debut in 1742 was a success as a benefit concert for charity, and it has since become one of the most well-known and performed choral works in history.
