Palm Sunday marks Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem and the beginning of Holy Week. As Jesus entered the city, crowds greeted Him with great celebration—waving palm branches and laying their cloaks on the road—recognizing Him as their king.
According to the Gospels (Matthew 21, Mark 11, Luke 19, and John 12), Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9 that the Messiah would come riding on a colt. The donkey symbolized humility, peace, and servant leadership—very different from the warhorse of an earthly conquering king.
Palm branches were waved and placed along the road as symbols of victory, honor, and royalty. The people welcomed Jesus with joyful shouts of “Hosanna!” as He entered the city.
Palm Sunday invites us to celebrate Christ’s arrival while preparing our hearts for the journey of Holy Week that leads to the cross and ultimately to the joy of the resurrection.
