The Crisis in Haiti: GVCM’s Update 

Easter Weekend

By now, we assume you’ve seen the coverage of Haiti’s crises in the news – increasing gang rule, over a million people on the brink of famine, hundreds kidnapped, and violence filling the streets of Port-au-Prince and beyond. You may have even seen Pastor Yves on the news (scroll down to the recommended learning section to watch his interview).
 
From our team on the ground, we want to confirm that yes, all this is happening in Haiti.
 
A few weeks ago, our government documents needed to be renewed, so one of our staff members brought them into Port-au-Prince. He, along with other Haitians, were kidnapped. While the gang members were distracted with other victims, our staff member miraculously escaped. He walked four days through the mountains to avoid the gangs. We praise God for his life returned to our team. The government documents, money, and GVCM’s private information remained with the kidnappers.
 
We want you to know that the children at the orphanage and our staff are okay. The children don’t know the extent of what is happening beyond the orphanage walls, and our staff courageously continues to show up and serve in their respective roles.
 
A recent news report concluded that danger is worsening in PAP with every passing hour.
 
As of now, the gangs have not moved into the Mirebalais area. They are clustered in and around the capital, which is about 35 kilometers away from our main campus, where the orphanage, clinic, Fedja church, and farm are located.
 
We know that each passing day of peace for our team is an answer to your prayers of protection. We also know that as violence increases, so does the number of people who need aid.
 
Because of God’s generous grace, we believe that together, we can be agents of His healing and hope. Our team in Haiti is equipped to serve, shepherd, and care for the hurting people of Haiti - they do it every day!
 
In the face of so much need, our team relies on your prayers and the ways you might be able to multiply their efforts.

Faith Academy near Croix-des-Bouquets Haiti. 

The church was originally built, with financial support from Armstrong and other churches, to serve as a daily chapel for the 300+ students at Faith Academy.  In addition, they have employed a regular pastor to expand the church into a community church. Pictured above is a recent worship service, attended by over 300 people from the surrounding community.


Armstrong has funded the construction of an apartment for the pastor and his family. They will live on the grounds at Faith Academy, to further the community outreach of the church.  Pictures is the kitchen in the new house for the Pastor at Faith Academy. 

The Pastor and his family had formerly lived a 45-minute to one-hour can ride away, which limited the time that could be spent on-campus at Faith Academy. With the move, the Pastor and his family will be on-campus full time, allowing them to broaden their ministry to the school, and most importantly to extend their reach into the surrounding community.

Armstrong is also working with other churches to fund and build a chicken coop and egg-producing operation.  When it is up and running, the 200+ hens are expected to produce at least one egg a day for each of the 140 children in the orphanage there.  These eggs will be a significant improvement to their diet, in a country where food remains scarce.
